Przywódcy 27 państw Unii Europejskiej zgodzili się na przesunięcie daty wyjścia Wielkiej Brytanii ze wspólnoty. Porozumienie wypracowane na szczycie zakłada dwa scenariusze. Jeśli w przyszłym tygodniu brytyjski parlament nie zaakceptuje umowy rozwodowej z UE, datą brexitu będzie 12 kwietnia. Jeśli deputowani w Londynie zaaprobują kontrowersyjną umowę, Wielka Brytania opuści Unię 22 maja.
Rozmowy w gronie przedstawicieli 27 krajów UE trwały siedem godzin. Dopiero późnym wieczorem Przewodniczący Rady Europejskiej Donald Tusk spotkał się premier Theresą May informując ją o decyzji UE. Z konkluzji przyjętych przez przywódców wynika, że w przypadku drugiego scenariusza UE oczekuje, że przed 12 kwietnia Zjednoczone Królestwo określi dalsze działania do rozważenia przez Radę Europejską.

Theresa May poparła w czwartek przyjęte przez Radę Europejską nowe terminy dotyczące procesu wyjścia Wielkiej Brytanii z Unii Europejskiej. Powtórzyła, że dłuższe opóźnienie brexitu i wzięcie udziału w wyborach do Parlamentu Europejskiego byłoby "niewłaściwe".
