Każdy konsument robiąc zakupy może mieć obawy o jakość kupowanej żywności. Wynikać one mogą z przekazu medialnego lub opinii przyjaciół. Umożliwia on podmiotom działającym w łańcuchu spożywczym i paszowym wdrożenie wymagań zapewniających stosowanie najlepszych praktyk w obszarze wyrobów wolnych od GMO, a także zapewnienie najwyższej jakości oraz zgodności z przepisami prawnymi.
Tworząc niniejszy standard poczyniono kilka istotnych założeń. Uznano, że pojęcie wolne od GMO będzie odnosiło się do poziomu zawartości składników modyfikowanych genetycznie określonych w przepisach prawa, wynikającego z techniczno-technologicznych możliwości pozyskania produktu „wolnego od GMO” na konkretnie określonym poziomie jego dopuszczalnej obecności. Producenci posiadający certyfikat Standardu PIM „Bez GMO” są w stanie udowodnić swoim klientom, że oferowany przez nich produkt jest bezpieczny oraz spełnia ich oczekiwania.
