W 2021 roku z obrotu znikną patyczki higieniczne, plastikowe widelce, noże, łyżki, talerze, słomki czy mieszadełka do napojów. Na terenie całej Unii Europejskiej wchodzi właśnie w życie zakaz wprowadzania ich na rynek. Opróżnianie magazynów z plastikowych sztućców czy talerzyków zakończy się 3 lipca 2021 r.
Od połowy roku wycofane zostaną także styropianowe kubki i opakowania na żywność. Produkty te stanowią bardzo duży problem, nawet ich selektywna zbiórka nie pomaga w ograniczeniu ich ilości. Wiele z nich nie trafia na składowiska, zanieczyszczają ekosystem i są prawdziwym zabójcą oceanicznej fauny. Według Komisji Europejskiej ponad 80% odpadów w morzach stanowią tworzywa sztuczne. Produkty objęte nowymi przepisami stanowią 70% wszystkich odpadów morskich.
