Tradycja ich pieczenia sięga XIII wieku, kiedy w Polsce rozwinął się handel przyprawami. Dawniej słowo „piernik” oznaczało przyprawę korzenną, używaną do pieczenia ciast z dodatkiem miodu.

Pierniki wyrabiane były początkowo przez piekarzy a następnie specjalnych rzemieślników piernikowych. Ze względu na spore koszty przypraw korzennych pierniki były dobrem luksusowym. Teraz zakup dobrych przypraw korzennych jest praktycznie nieodczuwalny dla naszej kieszeni: gotowa mieszanka kosztuje mniej niż 1 zł. W małej paczuszce znajdziemy idealnie skomponowane przyprawy: goździki, gałkę muszkatułową, cynamon, imbir i kolendrę.
